Named Estates

The Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA) has, for many years, denied the full extent of raptor persecution in Scotland. Each time there is a new incident, it is attributed to an “irresponsible minority”. The most vocal on the issue is the SGA Chairman, Alex Hogg. Hogg is on record, repeatedly suggesting that the extent of raptor persecution events is exaggerated and that gamekeepers are being accused unfairly. Here is an example: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2006/dec/29/frontpagenews.conservationandendangeredspecies

Raptor persecution is strongly linked to gamekeeping activities.

However, as you will see from our blog pages, raptor persecution is indeed widespread, and gamekeepers are, according to RSPB figures, responsible for a large proportion of the crimes where convictions have been secured.

On this page (scroll down) we will keep an updated list of those shooting estates where alleged raptor persecution events, wildlife crime incidents, and/or other alleged associated criminal activities (e.g. firearms offences, snaring offences, poisoned bait found) or police investigations have been recorded in the public domain,  and/or estates that employ gamekeepers who have a conviction for work-related offences.  All this information is already in the public domain but is not often found in one location, hence our collation here. The government and RSPB used to name the estates in their annual incident reports, but no longer do so. We believe it is in the public’s interest that this information is published, especially if lethal poisoned baits are being left out on the hill for unsuspecting walkers, dogs and children to find. It should be noted that alleged offences on these named estates, or by employees of  these named estates, happened as far back as 1979 and since then estate ownership (and thus management practices) may have changed. To put this in perspective, the year of the alleged offence and/or conviction is provided in brackets after the name of each estate. This also provides a pretty clear indication of how long raptor persecution has been taking place across Scotland without any apparent deterrent. In the interests of balance, we also record where there has been a reported change of ownership since the alleged offence and/or conviction.

To be clear, the inclusion of an estate’s name on this list does not indicate that a conviction for wildlife crime has been made on that estate or by a gamekeeper employed by that estate, just that an alleged raptor persecution incident/wildlife crime incident/and/or other alleged associated criminal activity (e.g. poison offences, firearms offences, illegal snaring) has been recorded, or a dead bird has been found in suspicious circumstances. In time, we will identify those with an actual conviction for criminal activity with an asterisk. The reader can draw their own conclusions about those with no asterisk.
